At the foot of the Pyrenees, between the Spanish fishing villages of Llançà and Colera, lies Perpendicular, a project I designed as a linear residential structure stretching from the Mediterranean Sea into the mountains, connecting two contrasting landscapes through a single architectural gesture.

The dramatic variety of the site rugged mountains, forests, green valleys, beaches, and sea creates a rich and diverse natural environment. To preserve this landscape as much as possible, the structure is elevated on slender columns, allowing nature to remain largely untouched beneath it. This approach creates striking panoramic views that intensify the experience of the surrounding landscape.

The structure contains three types of dwelling units, each carefully adapted to its specific landscape setting. Through a series of framed sightlines, every unit establishes a unique relationship with its surroundings. In the mountains, views are directed upward towards the sky and the endless horizon, while the units above the water focus downward toward the sea below. The structure also accommodates public functions, which are integrated within the supporting columns.
Residents and visitors can easily reach Perpendicular by train via the existing railway line. At the intersection of the railway and the residential structure, a station allows passengers to transfer to capsules that transport them either towards the blue-green waters of the Mediterranean or into the deep-grey mountains beyond.

Aan de voet van de Pyreneeën, tussen de Spaanse vissersstadjes Llançà en Colera, ligt het door mij ontworpen Perpendiculair. Een lineaire woonstructuur die zich vanaf de Middellandse Zee tot in de bergen uitstrekt en daarmee twee landschappelijke extremen met elkaar verbindt.

Het afwisselende natuurschoon van ruige bergen, bossen, groene valleien, strand en zee zorgt voor een divers en indrukwekkend landschap. Om de natuur zo ongerept mogelijk te laten rust de structuur op hoge kolommen. Zo ontstaan indrukwekkende vergezichten die de beleving van de natuur intensiveert.

De structuur omvat drie typen verblijfseenheden die zijn afgestemd op de landschappelijke context. De verblijfseenheden zijn met de omgeving verbonden door zichtlijnen met steeds een andere oriëntatie op de omgeving. Zo zijn de zichtlijnen in de bergen naar boven gericht op de hemel en de eindeloze horizon en de wooneenheden boven het water naar beneden. De woonstructuur biedt tevens ruimte aan publieke functies, die in de kolommen zijn ondergebracht.

Bewoners en bezoekers kunnen Perpendiculair gemakkelijk bereiken met de trein via de bestaande spoorweg. Op het kruispunt met de woonstructuur is een halte waar bewoners kunnen overstappen op een capsule die hen naar de groen-blauwe zee brengt, of toch naar de diep-grijze bergen...
